Most businesses do not fail at social media because of the algorithm. They fail because they post without a plan, on too many platforms, and measure the wrong things. This guide walks through the seven-step strategy we build for clients, adapted for how people in India actually use social media in 2026.
What has changed going into 2026
Short vertical video is still the main way new people discover accounts on Instagram and YouTube. AI tools have made it easy to produce posts, which means generic content is everywhere and real photos, faces and local detail stand out more. Conversations increasingly move from comments to DMs and WhatsApp, so replying fast has become part of marketing. And in India specifically, regional-language content keeps growing as more first-time internet users come online.
The 7-step social media strategy
- 1
Set goals you can measure
Pick one or two goals that matter to the business: enquiries, bookings, online sales, or brand searches. Turn each into a number and a deadline, for example "40 WhatsApp enquiries a month from Instagram by March". Followers and likes are useful signals, not goals.
- 2
Know exactly who you are talking to
Write down who your best customers are, where they live, which language they use online, what they worry about before buying, and when they are on their phones. Look at your own customer messages and reviews; they tell you more than any demographic report.
- 3
Choose platforms, and say no to some
Two platforms done well beat five done badly. Match platforms to your audience and the formats you can produce: Instagram and Facebook for most local and consumer businesses, LinkedIn for B2B, YouTube for anything people want explained, WhatsApp Business and Channels for repeat customers.
- 4
Define three to five content pillars
Pillars are the recurring themes you post about: for a clinic, perhaps patient questions, behind the scenes, team introductions, offers and health tips. Pillars keep content varied, make planning faster, and stop every post from being a sales pitch.
- 5
Plan formats around short video
Reels and Shorts reach the most new people on Instagram and YouTube right now. Carousels work well for tips and comparisons, Stories for everyday updates and polls, and live sessions for launches and Q&As. Plan festival and seasonal content weeks ahead: Diwali, Durga Puja, Bihu, Navratri, Eid and wedding season often decide the year.
- 6
Make engagement part of the plan
Reply to comments and messages quickly, especially enquiries; a lead that waits a day often goes elsewhere. Reshare customer posts (with permission), answer questions in Stories, and pass serious enquiries to sales the same day.
- 7
Measure monthly and adjust
Each month, check what drove saves, shares, profile visits, link clicks and messages, and what brought actual leads. Do more of what worked, drop what did not, and change one thing at a time so you know what caused the difference.
How often to post: a realistic starting point
There is no perfect frequency. These are starting points for a small team; adjust based on what you can sustain and what your analytics show.
| Platform | Starting pace |
|---|---|
| 3 to 5 posts a week, including 2 Reels, plus Stories most days | |
| 3 to 5 posts a week; reuse Reels and add local community posts | |
| 2 to 3 posts a week from the company page and founders | |
| YouTube | 1 long video or 3 to 4 Shorts a week |
| WhatsApp Business | Catalogue kept up to date; Channel or broadcast once or twice a week at most |
Using AI without sounding like everyone else
Use AI to brainstorm topics, draft captions, turn one long video into several short clips, and summarise what your best posts have in common. Keep the parts that make you recognisable: your own photos and videos, real customer stories, local references, and the way you actually talk. Always check facts and prices before posting.
Paid social: when and how to start
Organic posts build trust with people who already follow you; ads reach people who do not know you yet. Start paid campaigns once you have a few posts that perform well organically and a clear offer. On Meta, begin with one campaign aimed at messages or leads, two or three audiences, and three or four creatives, then move budget to whatever brings enquiries at the lowest cost. LinkedIn ads cost more per click and suit B2B services with a high customer value.
Influencers and creators
Smaller, local creators with an engaged audience that matches your customers usually give better value than large accounts. Check their recent comments for real engagement, agree deliverables in writing, and make sure paid partnerships are clearly disclosed, as required by India's advertising guidelines for influencers.
Putting the strategy to work
Write your strategy on one or two pages, share it with whoever posts and replies, and review it every month. For the day-to-day side (calendars, approvals and replies), see our social media management best practices. For short video, our video editing guide covers hooks, captions and pacing. If you would rather have it done for you, our social media marketing service builds and runs the whole plan.
